The Wangduechhoeling Palace Museum and Cultural Centre is more than a place where history is preserved – it is a living cultural space where Bhutan’s heritage continues to inspire, educate, and connect people of all ages. As the nation’s first royal palace transformed into a museum, WPMCC is committed to fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of Bhutan’s history, culture, traditions, and values through a diverse range of educational and outreach programmes.
Guided by Bhutan’s philosophy of Gross National Happiness, which recognizes culture as a cornerstone of national well-being, the Museum offers guided tours, educational visits, workshops, lectures, exhibitions, cultural demonstrations, performances, competitions, and other interactive learning experiences. These programmes encourage participants to explore the past in meaningful and engaging ways while inspiring curiosity, creativity, cultural pride, and a lifelong commitment to preserving Bhutan’s rich heritage.
By bringing history and living traditions to life, the Museum seeks not only to educate but also to nurture future custodians of Bhutan’s cultural legacy, ensuring that it remains vibrant, relevant, and cherished for generations to come.
Inter School
Cultural Competition
The Inter-School Cultural Competition is envisioned as an annual programme of the Wangduechhoeling Palace Museum and Cultural Centre. Held in commemoration of the Birth Anniversary of Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen, the Royal Patron of the Museum, the competition celebrates Bhutan’s rich performing arts while inspiring young people to appreciate, embrace, and carry forward their cultural heritage. Bringing together students from schools across Bumthang, the programme provides a vibrant platform to showcase traditional and contemporary Bhutanese music, dance, and other performing arts, while fostering confidence, creativity, teamwork, and cultural pride. More than a competition, it embodies the Museum’s vision of serving as a living cultural centre where heritage is celebrated, experienced, and passed on to future generations.
Summer Weaving
Programme for Students
The Summer Weaving Programme for Students celebrates the Palace’s historic association with Bhutanese textile traditions. Once home to generations of master weavers serving the Royal Household, Wangduechhoeling provides a fitting setting for young Bhutanese to learn directly from skilled artisans and experience the beauty, discipline, and cultural significance of traditional weaving. Through hands-on training and mentorship, the programme inspires the next generation to value, preserve, and carry forward Bhutan’s extraordinary textile heritage.
The Inter-School Theatrical
Performance Competition
The Inter-School Theatrical Performance Competition envisages to use theatre to inspire creativity, strengthen language, and celebrate Bhutanese culture. Bringing together high school students from across Bumthang, the competition encourages participants to research, write, and perform original plays rooted in Bhutan’s history, values, and lived experiences. By alternating between Dzongkha and English in successive years, the programme promotes linguistic excellence while cultivating confidence, collaboration, artistic expression, and a deeper appreciation of Bhutan’s cultural heritage. More than a competition, it reflects the Museum’s commitment to ensuring that heritage remains a living source of learning, creativity, and inspiration for future generations.
Educational Visits
and Guided Tours
The Educational Visits and Guided Tours Programme is a core activity of the Wangduechhoeling Palace Museum and Cultural Centre, designed to make Bhutan’s history, culture, and heritage accessible, engaging, and relevant to learners of all ages. Through guided tours, interactive interpretation, and specially designed educational experiences, students and visitors are invited to explore the stories of Wangduechhoeling Palace, the origins of Bhutan’s monarchy, and the nation’s rich cultural traditions. By connecting people with authentic places, objects, and stories, the Museum seeks to inspire a deeper appreciation of the country’s history while fostering a shared sense of identity, stewardship, and pride in Bhutan’s living cultural heritage.
Mindfulness
Leadership Workshop
The Mindfulness Leadership Workshop draws upon Bhutan’s rich spiritual and cultural traditions to explore the principles of mindful and compassionate leadership. Through discussions, reflection, and experiential learning, the workshop provides participants with practical tools to cultivate self-awareness, resilience, ethical decision-making, and purposeful leadership in both their personal and professional lives. Rooted in Bhutan’s timeless wisdom yet relevant to the challenges of the modern world, the programme brings together respected Bhutanese scholars, practitioners, and resource persons to share perspectives on mindfulness, well-being, and values-based leadership.
Religious ceremonies
and Traditions.
As the ancestral home of Bhutan’s monarchs, Wangduechhoeling Palace serves as a vibrant museum, cultural centre, and active place of worship. Its two sacred temples, Lingka Lhakhang and Dralha Goenkhang, remain centerpieces of daily devotion, where our resident Lam conducts year-round prayers and traditional offerings passed down through generations.
Alongside daily rituals, the palace hosts annual ceremonies such as Dralha Zhâsum, Sindhu Khorlo, and our institutional rimdro, as well as community observances. By sustaining these sacred practices, we preserve not only the physical heritage of Wangduechhoeling, but also the living cultural traditions that define its legacy.
